The Iraqi city of Mosul bears the scars of war and ISIS occupation. Many neighborhoods still have piles of rubble where houses once stood. Amid the ruins, children scavenge for plastic and scrap metal in the hope of finding a buyer. This film accompanies Razzan, Hameed, and Maher - three boys from Harmat. The neighborhood is known locally for many families having had affiliations to the Islamic State terrorist organization. The jihadist militant group ruled Mosul from June 2014 to July 2017, before being ousted by Iraqi forces, with support from Kurdish Peshmerga fighters and the US Air Force, among others. Hameed’s and Maher’s fathers belonged to IS: One was arrested, the other is dead. The two boys are taken care of by Razzan, whose father was beaten by IS fighters. Together, the boys head out every day looking for scrap material in the ruins of Mosul. It's physically demanding and dangerous work - with many explosive devices still lurking in collapsed buildings. But they need to earn money to provide for their families because they don’t receive support from either the Iraqi government or international charity organizations. A bride and groom, whose wedding celebration ended in disaster after a fire killed more than 100 of their guests, have told Sky News they can no longer live in their community. Revan, 27, and bride, Haneen, 18, say they feel they are "dead inside" despite surviving the blaze, which started inside a packed wedding hall in Qaraqosh, in the Nineveh province of northern Iraq. Revan said he lost 15 members of his family in the fire, adding his bride "can't speak" after the loss of 10 of her relatives, including her mother and brother. Her father is also in a critical condition. Iraqi Interior Ministry released footage showing moments of deadly fire at a wedding hall in Mosul last week. Footage of the fire breaking out while the bride and groom were dancing also shows people running in a panic. Almost 100 people died in the tragic incident, local authorities said Wednesday, Sep. 27. There were 800 people at the wedding hall when the fire broke out, according to reports. Another 500 people were injured in the fire, which broke out at Al Haytham Wedding Hall in the Al-Hamdaniya district, southeast of the city of Mosul, local media reported, citing Ahmed Hamdani, deputy director of the Mosul Health Department. On August 8, nearly three years after the United States pulled out of Iraq, President Barack Obama ordered airstrikes to commence on Islamic State positions in northern Iraq, as the group’s fighters advanced towards the Kurdish capital of Erbil. For six weeks prior to the strikes the Islamic State made stunning gains within Iraq, effectively dismantling the border with Syria and defeating the Iraqi army with little in the way to stop them. In the final installment of VICE News’ unprecedented look inside the Islamic State, reporter Medyan Dairieh journeys 200 miles from the the group’s power base in the Syrian city of Raqqa to the border with Iraq. There, after defeating the Iraqi army manning the checkpoint, Islamic State fighters work further to bulldoze the border. As they clear apart a barrier that divided Iraq and Syria, Islamic State fighters declare an end of the Sykes-Picot Agreement, a nearly 100-year-old pact between France and Britain that divided up the Middle East. For now, that area between Iraq and Syria is part of a new territory: the Islamic State. Months after the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, I began filming the U.S. Army’s 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment (known as the Gunners) in Baghdad. The unit was housed in a bombed-out palace on the banks of the Tigris that they named Gunner Palace. Rather than just making a movie about the men, I suggested that we make a film together — an offer that the soldiers quickly embraced. They told the story of the war as only they could: They played guitar, spat out rhymes and played to the camera. But behind all their bravado and posturing, they were just kids who desperately wanted the world to understand the war through their eyes. In the last two months of 2003, the Gunners lost three men to I.E.D. attacks. They scrambled to create makeshift armor for their soft-skinned vehicles using scrap metal. When asked by a soldier about the lack of armor in 2004, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld famously said, “You go to war with the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time.” They were the army we had. They fought an enemy they couldn’t always see in a land they didn’t understand for reasons that were never entirely clear. In the midst of the pandemic, I visited the men and spoke with them about how they make sense of their role in a war that has yet to be fully reckoned with. And the timing couldn't be worse. Become a Video Lab member! 🤍 Iraq gets almost all of its water from two rivers: The Tigris and the Euphrates. Both begin in Turkey and make their way down the entire length of the country, before emptying into the Persian Gulf. The problem is - they are drying up. There are two main reasons for this. The first is geographical: Since both rivers begin in Turkey, Iraq doesn’t have control of how much water it receives. In the last 30 years, Turkey, Syria, and Iran have been building hundreds of dams along both rivers. Now only a quarter of the Euphrates reaches Iraq. Secondly, Iraq has been stuck in conflict for the last 16 years. In each case, the delicate network of treatment plants, dams, canals, and pipes has been repeatedly destroyed and neglected. All of this has boiled over in the city of Basra - at Iraq’s southern tip. Last summer, after hundreds were poisoned by the water - riots erupted and were deeply destabilizing for the new Iraqi government. If Iraq is to rebuild, it needs to get fresh water to its people - a challenge that is getting harder every year. West Mosul, Iraq – As Iraqi military recaptured the al-Nuri Mosque Thursday, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi claimed victory in the long fight against ISIS. Retaking the mosque was symbolically important – ISIS used the site to declare a so-called caliphate in 2014 – and Iraqi forces have fought a grueling battle to claw back lost territory in the three years since. VICE News' Ben Anderson has been following the Iraqi Army’s painstaking fight against the terror group, as they trying to cut the route between two of ISIS’s last remaining positions in west Mosul: the al-Jamhuri Hospital, which gives ISIS snipers a huge military advantage, and the old city, where most of the remaining fighters are hiding among civilians as they take their brutal last stand.
