The White House said it is mulling to re-designate Yemen’s Houthi rebels as a “terrorist” group, according to US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby. The statement comes after the Yemeni rebel group hijacked a cargo ship in the Red Sea on November 19. This includes the Arabian side of the Bab al-Mandab Strait that connects the Red Sea and the Gulf and leads to the Suez Canal, making the Strait one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. 9% of the worlds seaborne traded oil transits through this choke point and roughly 22,000 ships pass through here each year making it an important geostrategic location. Yemen's Houthi rebels seized an Israeli-linked cargo ship in a crucial Red Sea shipping route on Nov. 19, 2023, and took its 25 crew members hostage, officials said, raising fears that regional tensions heightened over the Israel-Hamas war were playing out on a new maritime front. The Iran-backed Houthi rebels said they hijacked the ship over its connection to Israel and would continue to target ships in international waters that were linked to or owned by Israelis until the end of Israel's campaign against Gaza's Hamas rulers. “All ships belonging to the Israeli enemy or that deal with it will become legitimate targets,” the Houthis said. Mohammed Abdul-Salam, the Houthis’ chief negotiator and spokesman, later added in an online statement that the Israelis only understand “the language of force.” “The detention of the Israeli ship is a practical step that proves the seriousness of the Yemeni armed forces in waging the sea battle, regardless of its costs and costs,” he added. “This is the beginning.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office had blamed the Houthis for the attack on the Bahamas-flagged Galaxy Leader, a vehicle carrier affiliated with an Israeli billionaire. It said the 25 crew members had a range of nationalities, including Bulgarian, Filipino, Mexican and Ukrainian, but that no Israelis had been on board. The war in Yemen is a conflict that has been going on for more than 7 years. Officially it is a civil war between the government forces of Mansur Hadi and the Shia "rebels" Houthi, but in reality it is a proxy war between Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and Iran for control of the Arabian Peninsula and the strategic Bab El Mandeb Strait. Unfortunately, the UN has described the war as one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes currently underway. A tanker linked to an Israel-affiliated company was seized off Yemen Sunday by armed individuals, a US defence official confirmed, following a series of incidents on the same shipping route. The maritime security firm Ambrey said that "US naval forces are engaged in the situation" after the incident involving the Central Park, which is owned and managed by a UK-based, Israel-linked company. Owner Zodiac Maritime said that among the 22 crew were Russian, Vietnamese, Bulgarian, Indian, Georgian and Filipino nationals, as well as a Turkish captain, according to Ambrey. Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels had previously threatened to attack the tanker if it did not divert to the port of Hodeida, it said. Yemen's Houthis rebels have released a video showing armed men seizing a cargo ship in the southern Red Sea. The video from Yemeni Military Media shows at least seven masked men, carrying what appears to be AK-47s, drop from a helicopter and land on the top deck of the ship. The ship was hijacked on Sunday by the Iran-backed group, who said the ship was linked to Israel. Israel claimed that the seized ship was instead British-owned and Japanese-operated.
